x-ring
Description
X-Rings, also known as Quad-Rings, can be used in a wide variety of static and dynamic sealing applications.
The four-lobed design provides twice the sealing surface in comparison to a standard o-ring. The double-seal action requires less squeeze to maintain an effective seal. This reduction in squeeze means less friction and improved seal life.
X-Ring parting lines are between the lobes, away from the sealing surface, thus eliminating the problems of leakage often resulting from a parting line's irregular surface as found on an O-Ring.
X-Rings are designed to out perform a standard O-Ring in rotary seal applications.  The four-lobed configuration creates a more stable seal avoiding spiral twisting.  This allows the use of a more narrow groove width than a standard O-Ring groove, but can also be used in a standard O-Ring groove.
 
Advantages
In contrast to the O-Ring, X-Seal has the following advantages:
1)Avoids twisting in the groove. Due to its special profile, the seal does not tend to roll in the groove during reciprocating movement.
2)Low friction.
3)Very good sealing efficiency. Due to an improved pressure profile over  X-Seal cross-section,a high sealing effect is achieved.
4) A lubricant reservoir formed between the sealing lips improves start up.
5) Unlike anO-Ring, the mould line flash lies in the trough,between and away from the critical sealing lips.
Applications:
Fields of Application
X-Seal is used predominantly for dynamic sealing functions. It`s use is always limited by the pressure to be sealed and the velocity.
Dynamic applications
1) For sealing of reciprocating pistons, rods, plungers, etc.
2) For sealing oscillating, rotating or spiral movements on shafts, spindles, rotary transmission leadthroughs, etc.
Static applications
Design Instructions
1)Choice of QUAD-x-Seal size
The chosen cross section W should be in an appropriate ratio to the inside diameter d1.
2)For static applications, x-Seals with smaller cross sections may be used elongation - compression with a radial sealing configuration, x-Seal  in an internal groove 
3)Initial Squeeze
An initial sqeeze of x-Seal in the groove is essential to ensure its function as a primary or secondary sealing element
